Centre of Excellence for Research on Environment, Health and Aging

Associate Partners

Alterra, Wageningen UR, the Netherlands

Alterra is a main Dutch research institute for the environment. Alterra offers a combination of practical and scientific research in a multitude of disciplines related to the green world around us and the sustainable use of our living environment. The Soil Science Centre of Alterra is involved in research in soil science and in all aspects of land use. The centre conducts research on the physical, chemical and biological processes within soils and their mutual interaction – as well as the conditions which affect soil processes and the effect soil processes have on the environmental quality of air and water. Research is conducted on local, regional, national and global scales and contributes to sustainable soil use and sustainable design and management of the environment. Important issues driving research activities within the centre include maintaining soil biodiversity, maintaining clean ground water and surface water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and chemical soil pollution, and creating sustainable (organic) agricultural systems.

The Centre for Water and Climate comprises at present seven chair groups of Wageningen University and four teams of Alterra. The teams and chair groups have a different scope of activities but ample opportunities for collaboration. The Centre faces the challenge to transform the synergy potential in various fields of research, use of facilities, education, capacity building, acquisition and organizational matters into concrete research strategies, integrated research projects and benefits for staff, teams and chair groups. Within FP5/6

of the EU, Alterra has been involved, either as coordinator or partner institution, in more than 85 projects.
